The UNESCO-listed Ngorongoro Highlands are the African wilderness at its grandest: a vast unbroken caldera, formed millions of years ago by a volcanic eruption, now teeming with wildlife. Two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle race for their lives across the Serengeti in the annual Great Migration between July and October, dodging crocodiles, hyenas and big cats with big teeth. Bordering Tanzania in Kenya’s southwest, Maasai Mara is named after its ancestral inhabitants and the dotted appearance of its acacia-studded plains. Its golden savannahs, riverine forests, low-lying mountains and sheer cliff are best known for hosting one of the most extraordinary events on the globe: the Great Migration, in which over two million wildebeest and zebra arrive from the southern Serengeti between June and November.
