Situated more than 600 miles off mainland Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands provide a window into a world where animals have evolved without fear of humans. In the Peruvian Amazon, people play second fiddle to a river powerful enough to nourish the world’s largest rainforest. Each is a truly unique destination in its own right; to combine both on one trip makes for an unforgettable immersion into South America’s wilderness, particularly when experienced side-by-side with Quito’s ancient highland citadel first settled by the Incas and modern cities Lima and Guayaquil whose defiant, poetic soul captures contemporary Latin America.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

Your Itinerary

Our experts have designed this gold-standard itinerary to inspire you, featuring our pick of the best hotels and experiences in every thrilling destination.

High atop El Panecillo hill, a tall statue of the Virgin Mary smiles over Quito’s gleaming baroque churches and huddled roofs. Between cobbled squares and steep hillsides, Ecuador’s traditional mountain culture still thrives here: pre-Columbian treasures fill the city’s museums, chefs put modern spins on ancient ingredients and venerable market traders are always ready with the perfect, sage-scented remedy.

Your A&K Experiences:

Step into the beautiful, beating heart of Quito on a guided tour of the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this grid of bustling, steep streets, see some of its most iconic sights, including the opulent Compañía de Jesus Church, whose walls groan with over seven tons of gold. Go behind the scenes on a VIP tour and get a unique perspective on the city from the church rooftop.

Galapagos

"Although merely a few hundreds of miles from the mainland, the Galapagos Islands may feel even further away in reality; modern life has largely skirted this group of volcanic, windswept pearls, still every bit as wild and wondrous as when Charles Darwin set foot here in the 1830s.

The wildlife he observed so carefully is still the main draw of any adventure here. Colorful Sally Lightfoot crabs and lumbering iguanas, curious boobies and a score of famous finches: many of them are found nowhere else, highly adapted to life on these lonely, elemental islands.

Every day brings new encounters as you sail between San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Isabela and a handful of smaller isles: snorkel through shoals of colorful fish, spot fantastical birds on a hike through the ferns, or ponder the mysteries of evolution as you gaze into the century-old eyes of a giant tortoise. "

Your A&K Experiences:

Get exhilaratingly close to nature on an array of unforgettable experiences: spot giant tortoises grazing on the grassy highlands of Santa Cruz, snorkel with turtles off Vicente Roca Point and walk among the skeletal coral gardens of Urbina Bay, now reclaimed by lizards and mockingbirds.

Guayaquil

Youthful, vibrant Guayaquil is Ecuador’s largest city, drunk on Pacific breezes and crouching on the west bank of the mighty Guayas River. The candy-coloured houses bounding down its hills are filled with interesting galleries and community initiatives but the beating heart of the city is the picturesque Malecón 2000, which essentially operates as a waterfront town square. This breezy boulevard is where you’ll find sleek restaurants serving coconut-rich encocado (fish stew) and university students milling around on the water’s edge.

Your A&K Experiences:

To snorkel or dive among the ghosts of ships wrecked in the waters off Guayaquil is to travel back to a time when pirates pillaged boat loads of treasure bound for the Old World.

Lima

Occupying a unique position on Peru’s Costa Verde, Lima has 80 miles of coastline and virtually no rain. Its 18th-century haciendas, baroque stonework and colonial architecture are upstaged by the country’s pre-Columbian history on display at museums like Pueblo Libre’s Larco. Surfboards are strapped to mopeds that dip between the mansions of Miraflores, whilst pisco sours are shaken to the beat of peñas in Barranco. Lima's much-starred restaurant scene is so effervescent that the city is widely acknowledged as the culinary capital of Latin America, and shows no signs of dimming; the city has more than 16,000 cevicherias (UNESCO has declared Peru's staple dish one of Intangible Cultural Heritage), while chefs such as Virgilio Martínez and Pedro Schiaffino are innovating with indigenous ingredients from Andean tomatoes to Amazonian river snails.

Your A&K Experiences:

Visit the Larco, Lima’s best museum for pre-Columbian artifacts. Set in a majestic, 18th-century mansion surrounded by gardens, it houses over 45,000 pieces, including ceramics, mummies, a gold room and textiles made of feathers.

The Amazon

Running from its source in central Peru to the Atlantic Ocean, this iconic river is a magnet for wildlife lovers. Immerse yourself in the sleepy backwaters, lush islands and deep jungle of the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, a wedge of rainforest bounded by the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali tributaries. A luxury cruise aboard A&K’s new riverboat, Pure Amazon, is the most indulgent way to experience this untouched wilderness – a wonderfully biodiverse stretch of jungle alive with sloths, monkeys, caimans, pink dolphins, turtles, manatees and stunning birdlife.

Your A&K Experiences:

In the company of rainbow-coloured macaws that skim over the river, A&K’s expert guides know which leaf to lift and where to direct your eyes to reveal a baffling medley of creatures on nocturnal nature walks, as well as kayaking trips through intriguing tributaries.
