Tambarare Camp, an A&K Sanctuary

Tambarare Camp, an A&K Sanctuary
There is a particular magic and majesty about the wide-open, gently rolling yet ruggedly dramatic landscape of the Laikipia Plateau, in central Kenya. In relatively recent times the region has become well known for its high-profile conservation initiatives, enjoying particular success with its rhinoceros population. The 90,000-acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy – in which Tambarare Camp is located – has played a key part in this success, and is presently home to the last two northern white rhinos on earth. As a base from which to explore this wowing wilderness, and as a bastion of low-key luxury, Tambarare can’t be beaten.

FOR FAMILIES
Perfectly peaceful haven in a pioneering conservation area
With just 10 opulent tents and a private villa set deep in the award-winning Ol Pejeta Conservancy among 90,000 acres of prime African plains, Tambarare Camp is the area’s most luxurious and exclusive camp. Pitched among fever trees in the shadow of Mount Kenya, the camp reflects a profound respect for nature with its thoughtful low-impact design that doesn’t skimp on wow-factor.
Strategically located to face a favorite gathering place for an extraordinary variety of game, it is a place where guests can enjoy drinks or dinner while revelling in widescreen views of buffaloes, zebras, rhinos, elands, and other species grazing on the plains. And with so few guests, an intimate experience is guaranteed. The main tent is lined with comfortable sofas and chairs to encourage relaxation and reflection, and its adjoining Boma Bar is just the setting for a well-earned sundowner and the sharing of stories.
The camp’s colours and textures are inspired by nature, from sun-bleached wood and wicker lampshades to exuberant fabrics and striking colour-pop portraits of Samburu women. With their polished teak floors and locally sourced objects, the individually decorated canvas tents have a boutique-meets-bush style that puts a contemporary spin on Golden Age grandeur. Ultimately you will find Tambarare to be a peaceful haven that reflects its surroundings – with first class service and a generous helping of indulgence.

WHEN TO GO
A prized sanctuary for endangered species
Home to an enormous array of wildlife, the 90,000-acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy – on the dramatic Laikipia Plateau, reached in about five hours from Nairobi – offers a range of day and night safaris, lion tracking, horse riding and guided bush walks. The protected rhino sanctuary that houses the last two northern white rhinos is also home to the largest black rhino population in East Africa, and the plains beyond are a haven for endangered species, the Big Five, and more than 500 bird species.
Enhance your stay with these extraordinary experiences
The unique combination of Tambarare’s location, landscape and habitat make possible a number of activities not frequently associated with the safari experience, including lion tracking and cycling. And of course, there is the opportunity to see the last two remaining white northern rhinos on earth.

Expert-led game drives in the early morning and late afternoon take you directly into this extraordinarily biodiverse habitat. Rhinos are the stars of the show (and among the easiest to spot), but Ol Pejeta is also home to a tremendous variety of species, large and small. There is also the opportunity to venture out after dark on night game drives in search of nocturnal species, such as the aardvark, white-tailed mongoose, zorilla (striped polecat) and bat-eared fox.

Ol Pejeta has a worldwide reputation for its rhinoceros-conservation and translocation initiatives. Don’t miss the opportunity to get up close and personal with the last two northern white rhinos on earth, Najin and Fatu, and learn about their incredible story. Very comfortable around humans, the pair (and the southern white females with which they share their private enclosure) are known to approach vehicles for some unforgettable encounters.

Nothing quickens the senses quite like a stroll in the African wilderness. And because Tambarare Camp is located within a private conservancy, guided walks are not merely possible but strongly recommended.

The careful monitoring of Ol Pejeta’s lion population is an ongoing project; guests at Tambarare can accompany rangers and actively help protect these big cats.

This ace canine anti-poaching team is an essential part of Ol Pejeta’s conservation efforts. Join the dogs and their handlers for a unique sniff of adventure.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy aims positively to impact the surrounding communities through education, agriculture and livestock enterprise. Visit the local communities and see the work the conservancy undertakes in health care services, sustainable energy and community enterprise initiatives, first hand.

For fitness and adventure fans, there is no better way to train than on a three to four-mile running route across the Ol Pejeta plains. This is a rare activity in the bush, so make the most of it while you can.
