Ngorongoro Crater Camp, an A&K Sanctuary
Here, close to the rim of the largest extinct volcano in the world, the simple meets the sublime. Just 10 impeccable, uncomplicated tents give easy access to the great caldera that is home to thousands of animals, including all of the Big Five – among them, the largest of the remaining bull tusker elephants in Africa. Our earliest upright ancestors are thought to have taken their first steps in these parts some 3.6 million years ago and the sense of wonder they doubtless felt is palpable today.
Intimate and minimalist, with just 10 pared-back guest tents and two bar/dining spaces
Beautiful, forested setting in the shade of acacia trees – with an enchanting dawn chorus from the resident birdlife
The unique topography of Ngorongoro Crater, abundant with zebras, lions, rhinos, cheetahs, elephants, hippos, warthogs and even the elusive leopard
Encounters with local Maasai and the chance to take part in cultural activities
Sundowners overlooking nature while warming yourself by the fire pit

Charmingly classic camp near the crater’s edge
The local Maasai people have a deep connection with Ngorongoro Crater – the world’s largest inactive, intact, unfilled volcanic caldera – and the life it encloses and sustains. Indeed, the name “Ngorongoro" refers to the sound made by cow bells as the Maasai herders lead their cattle through this epic wilderness which is home to more than 25,000 individual animals. With such a feature on its doorstep, Ngorongoro Crater Camp keeps things simple – just 10 pared-back guest tents and two adjoining bar and dining tents.
The camp's setting, in a cluster of acacia trees, is enchanting. Watch in awe as the late- afternoon light filters through the woodland and a campfire crackles to life – a magical sight and sound. Indoors, monochrome portraits lining the communal areas depict your most regularly sighted neighbors – zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephants, lions and leopards – while the chorus of tree-dwelling birdlife serves as your morning alarm call.

WHEN TO GO
Ngorongoro Crater’s forested edge
Where to begin? About three million years ago, when a volcano erupted so violently that it collapsed upon itself, creating a caldera 2,000 feet deep over an area of 160 square miles. This is Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact, unfilled volcanic caldera – unfilled, that is, by anything other than animals: between 25,000 and 30,000 of them, give or take, including all of the Big Five. Today, the crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and many consider it to be the eighth wonder of the world. A hike around the edges of the crater, to gaze down its sheer drop and watch the wildlife roaming below, is highly recommended too.
Enhance your stay with these extraordinary experiences
Ngorongoro Crater Camp occupies an idyllic position near the largest extinct volcano on earth, whose vast caldera is both uniquely beautiful and game-rich. Eyes peeled for elephants, hippos, buffaloes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, impalas, zebras, wild dogs, jackals, hyenas… And that’s before we even get started with the birds.

Drives in the early morning and late afternoon in a closed 4x4 take you into the thick of this unique and extraordinarily biodiverse habitat – either around the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater (spectacular in itself) or down on the crater’s floor (entirely unique, and best experienced on a day-long drive). It may also be possible to arrange a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park en route to or from the camp and Lake Manyara Airport.

The camp has a strong, longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship with the local Maasai. Expect a warm welcome to their manyatta village, enclosed by thorn bushes and comprising small huts decorated with beadwork and fabrics. There is no better way to learn more about local culture, customs and daily life than from the Maasai themselves, one of Tanzania's most iconic ethnic groups.
