Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Deep in the verdant heart of Uganda’s breathtakingly beautiful Bwindi Impenetrable Forest lies Gorilla Forest Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary. Around 1,000 mountain gorillas exist in the wild, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to more than half of them. Gorilla Forest Lodge is unrivalled as a base for trekking to observe these magnificent, elusive creatures. Recently reopened in June 2025 after a complete overhaul, the 10-villa lodge has been beautifully and eco-consciously redesigned in harmony with its natural surroundings, making it far and away the most luxurious place to stay in the national park. It is also the best-located – gorillas have been known to visit the lodge, and the brilliant forest rangers ensure sightings on every trek. Gorilla Forest Lodge also plays a vital role in saving mountain gorillas from extinction – every stay here funds A&K Philanthropy projects which support and conserve local communities, wildlife, and the Bwindi Forest itself.

An elegant, eco-conscious 10-villa luxury hideaway

Sensationally situated on a hillside overlooking the jungle canopy, the newly revamped Gorilla Forest Lodge is the most beautiful and luxurious place to stay within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park itself. It is also the best-located for gorilla trekking.

Ten standalone villas are set apart in the forest, each with a private viewing deck from which you can watch monkeys, plus rare and wonderful birds and butterflies. Sunrise is breathtaking – pale pastel light, ethereal mist shrouding the trees, the soundtrack of the primeval forest waking up.

The beating heart of the lodge is an indoor-outdoor lounge bar and restaurant space overlooking the rainforest. In the evenings, our resident musician plays traditional African folk songs on a harp while guests drink sundowners and exchange gorilla tales around the campfire. Other facilities include a spa, a boutique selling locally made products and souvenirs, and the Explorer’s Lounge where you will find maps and a selection of books on the flora, fauna and culture of Bwindi and Uganda.

When to Go

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Uganda’s Gorilla Heartland

Dense, mountainous, lush, breathtakingly beautiful – and poetically named. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is not, however, entirely impenetrable. Gorilla Forest Lodge provides the perfect point of entry into one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Africa – and the world. Bwindi is home to almost 500 mountain gorillas – around half the world’s remaining population. As a base from which to set off in search of these magnificent, critically endangered creatures, Gorilla Forest Lodge is unrivalled. A mist-topped tangle of treetops, strangling roots and coiling ferns, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the success stories of African conservation. Once the site of civil unrest, today it is a mysterious wonderland echoing with the call of 20 species of primate, including golden monkeys – and Africa’s largest population of habituated mountain gorillas. Trek through farmland and foliage to spend an intimate hour watching their loving, complex family dramas play out at your feet.

Enhance your stay with these extraordinary experiences

Seeing gorillas is likely to be your top priority during your time in lodge, and a trek into the mountains – day-long, physically demanding, potentially life-changing – will be central to your itinerary. But there is much else to do besides: more moderate guided walks to discover the flora and fauna of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest; interactive community visits, including time spent with the Batwa, the traditional guardians of the forest; and the chance to see several A&K Philanthropy projects in action. Or simply rest up at the lodge, take a treatment at the spa, read in the Explorer’s Lounge, swap stories by the campfire, and savor the privilege of being in this amazing spot. Maybe the wildlife will come and visit you.

Gorilla Trekking

Physically taxing and potentially life-changing, gorilla trekking is the star experience at Gorilla Forest Lodge. Only eight visitors are allowed to view each gorilla group per day, and it is an extraordinary privilege to be one of the select few. Trekking begins early at 7.30am, as the mist clears and the forest awakens. Expert rangers lead the way deep into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and explain the complicated etiquette involved in meeting a giant silverback. The gorillas you encounter belong to one of the 12 “habituated” family groups in northern Bwindi – and many of our guides have been involved in the habituation process themselves. Once you have located the gorillas, you can spend a maximum of one hour in their company. Note that trekking through dense, steep forest is demanding and requires a fairly high degree of physical fitness. However, Gorilla Forest Lodge also has specially customized sedan chairs (at additional cost), allowing less able guests to join gorilla treks.

Forest Walks

A guided walk from Gorilla Forest Lodge on the Munyaga Waterfall Trail is the ideal way to explore Bwindi’s diverse ecosystem. Its dense forest, bamboo groves and open glades are home to rare and unique species, including giant forest hogs, red-tailed, blue and colobus monkeys, baboons and chimpanzees. The walk is around 2.5 miles, takes about three hours and, in the company of an expert ranger from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, makes a great warm-up or cool-down day before or after your gorilla-trekking adventure.

Birding Walks

A bird-lover's paradise, Bwindi is aflutter with more than 350 species of birds, including some of the rarest avian species on the planet and 24 that are endemic to the region. Our local expert will guide you on a two-to-three-hour walk in search of these feathered forest-dwellers, including the vibrant and elusive African green broadbill, the African emerald cuckoo, and the brightly colored African pitta. Whether you are a seasoned twitcher or a curious beginner, this is an experience not to be missed.

Bwindi Community AKP Tours

Together with A&K Philanthropy, we have worked with Bwindi communities to launch health, enterprise and education initiatives which have helped us foster strong relationships with local residents. Our Bwindi Community Tour includes visits to the Bwindi Women’s Bicycle Enterprise and beadmaking workshop, a school and hospital, and opportunities to meet members of the Batwa community – the indigenous inhabitants of the region and traditional guardians of the forest. The tour is led by Dennis Mugume, AKP’s Field Coordinator in Uganda, who shares insights and information about the local community, giving guests the opportunity to learn more about the “real” aspects of the country they are visiting, beyond the incredible scenery and wildlife encounters they experience. It usually takes around two hours but can be tailored to suit you.

Meet the Batwa People

The Batwa People are the oldest inhabitants of the Great Lakes region of Central Africa and a significant minority group in the region. This full-day experience offers an opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in the Batwa’s unique and vibrant culture, and includes a three-hour walk through the dense forest, followed by an hour spent witnessing their way of life. Guests can expect a music performance, a visitation by the goddess, a demonstration of traditional hunting and gathering methods and a chance to listen to their captivating stories and understand how they live.
